Dr. Songtao Shi from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research discovered that baby teeth contained stem cells in 2003. One baby tooth can have one to two dozen stem cells. Stem cells can be used to treat a variety of diseases later in life. There have been studies done to see how stem cells can be used in the pancreas, heart, and brain to repair damage caused by some diseases.
Shi discovered that the stem cells in baby teeth can regenerate into bone, cardiac cells, cartilage, and neurons. To save baby teeth, it is recommended that dentists professionally removed the teeth in order to keep the blood supply that is necessary for storage. Additionally, a dentist has the equipment and a sterile environment.
