Bomb-Sniffing Dog Who Served To Tours In Iraq Passes Away, Honored With A 21-Gun Salute

Iireland was a bomb-sniffing dog who served two tours in Iraq. On September 10, Iireland had a memorial service at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Kentucky. Iireland, a 13-year-old Belgian Malinois, worked alongside her partner, Sergeant Josh Sutherland in 2007 and 2008 in Fallujah, Iraq. They both returned in 2009 and Sutherland officially adopted her.

Iireland had suddenly stopped eating, got weak, and had a persistent fever. She passed away on August 8, the cause of death is believed to have been cancer. Before she had gotten sick, Iireland was always very energetic and happy.

Sutherland said that she could be hardheaded while she was working. But Iireland was very confident in her abilities and always aimed to please. Sutherland and Iireland hit it off when they met. Sutherland has a passion for dogs and it lead him to his current career as a canine handler with the Transportation Security Administration.
