Humpback whales are one species of baleen whale. The adults, according to Wikipedia.com can range in length from 12-16 feet and weigh 36,000 kg (79,000 pounds)! Humpback whales are a very friendly species that have been observed interacting with bottlenose dolphin and right whales. The humpback whale was once almost hunted to extinction, but their numbers have slowly increased after a 1966 moratorium.
Every now and again, wild animals will allow us to see them and maybe even pet them. In 2012, in San Ignacio Lagoon, Mexico, a group of whale watchers got the experience of a lifetime when they were approached by a mother humpback whale and her calf. You can hear the excitement in everyone’s voices and the whales repeatedly surface near their boat.
